Self-Insured Fund vs. Traditional Carrier: What Louisiana Builders Should Know
January 7, 2026While Louisiana isn’t known for its harsh winters, seasonal conditions can introduce new hazards to construction jobsites. Shorter days, wetter conditions and colder mornings can all impact safety if crews aren’t prepared.
Here are five common winter jobsite hazards and practical steps to help reduce risk.
1. Slips, Trips and Falls
Rain, mud and damp surfaces are among the biggest winter risks on jobsites. Walkways, ramps and scaffolding can become slick quickly, and wet winter weather can soften soil. Regular housekeeping, proper drainage and slip-resistant footwear help crews maintain their footing. Keeping access points clear and stable throughout the day is key.
2. Cold Stress and Fatigue
Cool temperatures and wind can affect concentration, dexterity and endurance. Workers should dress in layers, keep hands dry and take scheduled warm-up breaks when needed. Supervisors should watch for signs of fatigue and encourage workers to speak up before symptoms worsen.
3. Reduced Visibility
Shorter daylight hours mean less natural light on the jobsite. When tasks begin earlier or extend later into the day, securing the proper lighting is essential. Well-lit work areas, walkways and equipment zones improve visibility, reduce errors and help prevent accidents.
4. Malfunctioning Tools and Equipment
Cold weather can significantly impact construction tools, equipment and vehicles. Low temperatures may cause batteries to drain more quickly, metal components to become brittle and hydraulic fluids to freeze, increasing the risk of unexpected equipment failures and unsafe operating conditions.
To help reduce these risks, it’s essential to take proactive steps like storing tools and equipment in heated or protected areas and conducting thorough inspections of tools, machinery and vehicles at the start of each shift before work begins.
5. Weather-Related Distractions
Cold, damp conditions can be uncomfortable and distracting, leading to lapses in focus. Taking time for daily safety check-ins and adjusting workflows when conditions change helps crews stay alert and engaged.
